How to Measure Your Nipple
- Stimulate the nipple so that it stands up, but do not pump or nurse immediately before measuring.
- Measure only the nipple diameter, excluding the areola (the darker area around the nipple).
- Measure both nipples, as they may be different sizes.
- Gently open the caliper’s jaws wider than your nipple’s diameter.
- Position the caliper around the base of your nipple (the widest part of the nipple itself).
- Slowly close the jaws until they just touch the sides of your nipple without pinching or compressing the tissue. The goal is a light “hug,” not a tight squeeze.
- Read the measurement in millimeters (mm) directly from the caliper’s scale.
- Find the corresponding flange size: Once you have your nipple measurement in millimeters (mm), you typically add 2-3 mm to find a good starting flange size.
- Prioritize comfort and effectiveness: The measurement is a starting point. The final decision on flange size should be based on comfort, proper milk removal, and the absence of pain during pumping.
Using the correct size is crucial for a better breastfeeding and pumping experience.
